Save Money on Groceries

There’s no way around spending money on food every month – it’s just something that we have to do for ourselves and our families.

Food is where we get our nutritional needs from, therefore, it’s only reasonable that this is where a large part of our monthly expenses goes to.

However, it is possible to save money on your monthly grocery bill, below are some tips for how to do this.

Don’t be Fooled by Fancy Packaging.

Believe it or not, food advertising goes beyond the commercials you see on television.

Marketing professionals know that the packaging the put their foods in often helps consumers decide which product they’re going to buy.

Make sure that you carefully read the nutritional information on the foods you’re considering purchasing before you buy them.

Don’t just purchase the one in the prettiest package.

You may be paying more for it because of the package when there is another product with the same nutritional value for cheaper.

Bring Out the Oven Mitts More Often.

While it is true that cooking more at home will require you to purchase more groceries, this is actually a cheaper alternative to eating out for most meals.

Why? You will cook in larger quantities than a restaurant will serve you, which means you will have enough food for multiple meals when you cook at home.

Additionally, you can often make multiple dishes with the same main ingredient.

This also gives you more “bang” for your buck.

Therefore, make a point to start cooking more at home instead of going out so often.

Buy More Whole Foods.

Many of us are guilty of buying foods at the grocery store that offer more “convenience.”

While this is okay sometimes, it really does cost of extra money in the long run.

If you want to cut back on your monthly grocery bill, then start buying more whole foods.

For instance, buy whole fish fillets and make your own fish sticks.

Fish sticks are more expensive than whole fish fillets because all the hard work is done for you.

Another example is to start making your own homemade bread.

Finally, buy fresh apples instead of canned apple pie filling.

Basically, the further a food is from its natural state, the more you’ll pay for it.

Analyze Prices Thoroughly.

Finally, take the time to actually analyze the prices of similar foods before you buy.

For example, upon first glance it may seem that a can of pinto beans is cheaper than a bag of dry pinto beans because the can says $0.79 and the bag says $1.00.

However, you’ll get far more cups of beans out of the bagged pinto beans than you will the canned pinto beans, making the bagged beans the better deal.

Taking the time to analyze each food and its corresponding cost can save you a lot of money in the long run, so get in the habit of doing it.

Obviously, clipping coupons and taking advantage of sales will help you save money on groceries, but you save far more by changing the way you look at the foods you buy and follow the tips above.
